Like the old days
There were many Mom and Pop motels along US 36 all Around $45 a night. Great road lots of scenery about 30 miles between towns.
Change in plans
Ran into a fellow from Salt Lake City at a gas station in Southern Illinois. Said he going West on US 36. I had never been on US 36 .. Sooooo

The Underground Railroad
This underground parking is on a site where several skeletons of runaway slaves were found in a tunnel. Everyone in the group was getting blurry photos once the tour guide starting his story.
Walnut St Bridge
Two black men were lynched on the bridge. Both were suspected of raping white women. One in 1893, the other in 1903. Stories on the Internet. Local folklore is much different than the internet. For those stories you'll have to take the tour.
Agoraphobia .....
A wealthy man lived in the room above the tree. He never left the room for many years. His servants brought him all he needed. He died there and many say they still see his figure in the window.
